Second-ever iPad car installation keeps it simple, maintains factory tech

E-mail Print PDF

The gang at SoundMan Car Audio was the first to install an Apple iPad into an automobile when they dropped one into the dash of a Toyota Tacoma pickup the very day the device was officially released. That install was pretty slick, but required a bit of customization to the dash and a relocation of the controls. Now that they've had more than a week to think about it, SoundMan has once again done a car install of the wündertablet, this time sticking it into the dash of a 2004 Nissan Maxima.

Aptera 2e moves forward, eyes set on X Prize

E-mail Print PDF

Aptera invited us down to the Palomar Airport in stunningly beautiful Carlsbad, CA to show off the latest iteration of their three-wheeled, high-mileage electric car, the 2010 2e. Before the fairly-close-to-production-ready car was driven into Hanger #11, CEO Paul Wilbur gave a state of the Aptera union address, explaining why the company has had its head down for the past several months. After all, a year ago you couldn't causally glance at a magazine or newspaper without seeing the white three-wheeler. But lately? Not so much.

Mail Jeep + Chevy small block + metal work = Colonial Viper car

E-mail Print PDF

Another day, another creation from another dude with a dollar and a dream. Oh, and a former Postal Service Jeep and some serious metalworking skills. Dean Shorey, Seabreeze Amusement Park's master ride mechanic – emphasis on "master" – took an old small-block and paired it with a mail truck, then dressed that heart in a fairly accurate representation of a Colonial Viper from the original Battlestar Galactica. And it's street legal, which is why there are New York license plates front and rear. On the other hand, there are no bumpers front or rear, but in space, no one can hear you... rear-end someone... Hat tip to Ed

Chrysler and NASA partner on advanced technologies

E-mail Print PDF

Now here's a partnership we didn't see coming: Chrysler and NASA  have jumped into bed to share research on things like radar, materials and robotics. While we can't imagine Chrysler has too much to add to that discussion, the partnership could have a wide-ranging impact on the company's future products. Neither NASA nor Chrysler is exactly willing to say how the government agency will benefit from joining up with the smallest of the Big Three, but the mind reels...

2010 Ferrari Challenge at MMP: A look inside the Corse Clienti garages

E-mail Print PDF

Oh, to be wealthy. We're not talking about slightly rich, either. We're talking about having your own Ferrari racecar with factory support  wealthy. Such a program actually exists, known as Corse Clienti (translated from Italian as "Racing Clients"). Imagine showing up to the racetrack with your car already there, which was flown in from the Ferrari factory earlier that week. There's no need to to get the car prepared, as Ferrari's very own mechanics are already on the job. Just sit back and relax until it's your time to get on the track, then hop in and take off.
